OVERVIEW

The 2018 U.S. Energy
and Employment Report

The 2018 U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER) finds that the Traditional Energy and Energy Efficiency sectors today employ approximately 6.5 million Americans. These sectors increased in 2017 by about 2 percent, adding 133,000 net new jobs, roughly 7% of all those created in the country.

The USEER analyzes four sectors of the U.S. economy. The first two of those sectors make up the Traditional Energy sector:

• Electric Power Generation and Fuels Production
• Transmission, Distribution and Storage
• Energy Efficiency
• Motor Vehicles

About the Report

Produced by the Energy Futures Initiative (EFI) in partnership with the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), the U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER) provides a quantitative lens with which to evaluate the employment impact of new energy technologies, shifting fuels deployment, and evolving transmission and distribution systems. It also presents a unique snapshot of energy efficiency employment in key sectors of the economy, including construction and manufacturing. The report also illustrates how fuel efficiency as well as new technologies and materials affect employment in the motor vehicle industry.

The Report’s Impact

"The USEER has proven to be an important tool for state energy officials, who will use this unique set of 'all of the above’ energy jobs data to inform policy development and planning."

— David Terry, Executive Director, NASEO

2018 Report Guidance and Sponsorship

NASEO produced the survey in partnership with EFI. The 2018 USEER project was guided by David Foster, who directed the first two editions of the USEER and now serves as a Distinguished Associate with EFI. The data was collected by BW Research Partnership, a research consultancy with offices in Carlsbad, California and Wrentham, Massachusetts. BW Research conducted the employer surveys for the first two editions produced by DOE.
